FIRST fun Quite a few Fridays ago I locked myself in my room so I could get as much schoolwork done as possible. I knew I wouldnt be getting much done that weekend. Why? I spent all day Saturday watching an intense compeition. What kind of competition, you ask? A robotics competition, of course! That Saturday was the Manchester FIRST Regional, and I was psyched to be there. What is FIRST? Only the greatest thing ever, basically. There are over 1,000 high school teams nationwide that compete in FIRST. In early January, a challenge is announced to the teams at the kickoff event. The challenge is actually a game- two alliances of three robots each compete in a fast-paced game. This year the game involved scoring in goals on the ground as well as goals high in the air (hence the name of this years competition, Aim High.) Bonus points are awarded for robots that are parked on a small ramp at the end of the match. Teams get 6 jam-packed weeks to design and build a robot that they think will do well at this game. (The game changes each year, so this is always a fresh challenge!) Then they compete at regionals scattered across the country. Theres also a crazy national competition a few weeks after that. I joined FIRST during my junior year of high school, and it was seriously awesome. But then (sad story ahead!) we lost our funding and our advisor didnt really want to keep up with the time committment, and that was the end of Team 30. =( I knew that MIT mentored a FIRST team (Team 97, which consists of students from several local high schools), but I decided to join FSAE instead. But then Adelaide 09 brought me back to earth. Shes a college student mentor for Team 97, and she invited me to the Manchester regional with the team. It was so awesome that I even stuck around for an extra day after classes ended for spring break just to go to the Boston regional too. Manchester was incredible. Team 1721 was really friendly and FIRST-y they won the Rookie Inspiration Award and I was so psyched for them. Team 1276 won the spirit award, which was well-earned. No one on their team walked anywhere- they danced. They were so much fun to be around. Team 58 gets a special shoutout for handing out saftey glasses, as does team 97 for letting me act like an idiot (while wearing a Team 97 shirt, no less) and cheering them on at both regionals, despite the fact that most of them had never even seen me before. I had such a great time at Manchester- I went around all day grinning from ear to ear because I was just so excited to be back at a FIRST competition. Oh FIRST. Where else can you find people laughing at nerdy jokes, cheering and screaming about engineering and design, exclaiming over the sheer awesomeness of navigation by sound or high quality robotic video feeds, and scrambling around to lend their competitors safety glasses and springs and drill bits? Where else can you find flashing lights and bright colors and face painting and colorful pins and crazy costumes and yelling and cheering and people dancing in the aisles and teams with names like Mechanical Mayhem and The PVC Pirates? Nowhere, thats where. *grin* And now for the pictures! This is what a typical regional looks like on the last day of competition (showing your team colors is an important part of FIRST): This is the field- where the matches actually take place and the robots are put to the test. This is the pit area- where teams keep their robot between matches and work to fix up anything that may not be working exactly as planned The drive team consists of 4 people: a driver (who moves the robot around), the operator (who pushes all the buttons and operates the robots functions), a human player (who gets to throw balls around), and a team coach (who keeps everyone calm in the heat of competition). In this picture, you can see that Team 97 has successfully navigated up the ramp for some bonus points. Go team! Team 97 in action. FIRST isnt Battlebots- but it can get rough out there. Team 97 is the RoboRuminants. Get it? Cows? (Yeah, it took me a loooong time to catch on to that one, so no worries.) At the end of the regional, everyone packs their robot into crates to be shipped off to the next location- if theyre lucky, its another regional, or even nationals. Nehalita said this awhile ago: I was talking to one of my friends who was experiencing her first regional as an alumni and she said it was quite different some emotions were: boring, depressing, stressfree. Watching as an alumni is definitely very different. It was pretty sad for me- I got to watch people doing a lot of stuff that I never got a chance to because I didnt have a team my senior year. Plus I was a lot more reserved as usual. You want to make sure youre not taking over when you could be letting the high school students learn things. You may have moved onto cooler things as a college student, but oh to be a high schooler on a FIRST team*grin* Of course, all these thoughts are going on in your head during a FIRST regional, where there is nowhere near enough time/space/quiet to sit around and feel sorry for yourself. Its mostly just excitement, but theres a little nostalgia in there too. On to the Boston Regional it was the first year Boston had a regional, but you would never know. Lots of fun to be had. =) The MC at Boston was insane. I tried to get good pictures but it was absolutely impossible. He zoomed around the field on roller blades and kept insisting that Team 97 was wearing tangerine and once even referred to it as that fabulous color. Hee. He was pretty awesome. The Boston pit area. Full of busy people, hard at work. The Boston field area. The awards ceremony happens after the elimination tournament. There are awards for winning the regional, as well as Team Spirit, Industrial Design, Quality, and lots others. Winning any of these awards is a pretty sweet deal, so even if your robot doesnt do so hot in the actual competition, you can still get some recognition and feel pretty good about yourself. Team 97s robot. It was quite the sturdy little robot. Sometimes teams will give out their own awards, and Team 97 received Best Defensive Robot from two separate teams at the Boston Regional. Here is what I do know: in order to be considered an active member of MIT-EMS, youre required to staff the ambulance for 49 hours each semester. Plus, there are 4 general body meetings (which take place in the evenings and each last an hour or two) and 4 drills sessions (there are two sessions-Sunday morning or Sunday afternoon- each lasts 4 hours and you get to choose your session) each semester. Youre only allowed to miss one of each. I havent worked on the ambulance much, but attending the meetings and drill sessions is really no big deal. As for staffing the ambulance- you get to make your own schedule and of course you can do homework on shift- you just cant count on it since you never know when youll be getting a call. So theres a lot to keep in mind, but the 49 hours works out to about a shift every other week, and the scheduling is pretty fle xible. Oh, and just so you know- free time is rare around here. Most people fill up their free time with sports or clubs or EMS or writing admissions blogs- and then its not free time anymore, is it? =) Oh, and as for driving the ambulance, all of MIT-EMS is student run- so yes, we do. Sports in America is an institution that many people experience on a daily basis, from participating in an activity, coaching a team, or even watching a game. Introduction Sequestration is a practice applied in the U.S. federal government to cut the cost of spending. This follows if the government expenditure exceeds the gross revenue in the fiscal year. In 2011, the Congress passed the Budget Control Act, which was aimed at cutting about $500 billion in the defense department for a period of 10 years. This will see a cut of $47 in the first financial year. If there rose a disagreement on additional cuts between the Senators and the Representatives, the government would be forced to impose $1.2 trillion as additional cut in a period of 10 years. Half of the cuts would come from the Federal agencies and the rest from the department of defense. The additional cuts are reffered to as sequestration. Effects of sequestration in the multiplier model Sequestration has an overall effect on multiplier model. As noted by Brue McConnel (1999), economists have pondered over the question of how a net increase in the exports may increase the equilibrium output of an economy by more than the actual net increase. This idea is referred to as the ‘multiplier effect’. In generic terms, when someone spends money, this spending becomes someone else’s income, hence, creating a multiplied effect on the income and spending within an economy. A net increase in exports is supported by a net increase in the production and output of final goods. This is because there may be several steps leading to production of the final output; the in-between production ste ps will create additional jobs and interim outputs generating a net higher increase in the economy. Theoretical ideas from the economists suggest that increased production encourages specialization and extension of information and knowledge from leaders in technology to laggards. As confirmed by Sercu (2009), this transfer, rationally, would result in the increased production of both export goods for internal consumption as manufacturers capitalize on the knowledge gained and economies of scale. This enables realization of industries’ expansion and thus improved government reve nue and creation of employment. Increase in export extents the benefits to third parties who include workers, business owners, stakeholders, and partners. Government spending includes both limited government expenditure and consumption, but does not include transfer payment effected by the state. An increase in government spending above its potential bears both long-term and short-term effects. According to Choi and Devereux (2005), an increase in the permanent spending results in an increase in the released money, thus, an increase in the circulating currency. An increase in government spending above the equilibrium results in the budget deficit, which means that the government has to borrow to fund its functions. This contributes to an increase in interest rates and subsequent reduction in the rate of investment. An increase in the interest rate would translate to less borrowing from banks and other financial institutions. This would affect the performance of enterprises due to la ck of finances, particularly those that depend on bank loans. This would then lead to an increase in inflation thereby affecting the real money supply. Prices for common commodities would go up affecting the living standards and citizens’ purchasing power. The multiplier model offers a graphical display and assumes a constant level of price. It quantifies the multiplier effect with the AS/AD model (Colander 2010, p 635). An increase or decrease in the multiplier results in an ultimate decrease or an increase by a factor, which is more than the first change contributed by the multiplier effect. This has to be funded either through borrowing or through selling government assets. This may increase the government debt resulting in a long-term effect when paying back the money. As revealed by Bussing-Burks and Marie (2011), an increase in government spending on purchases by one percent of the GDP results in a rise in actual GDP by 1.6 percent above the normal. Sometimes, the government spending might give varying effects depending on the amount of resources spent and the recovery powers. In one case, high government spending may keep on summing up to the GDP and, in another case, as indicated by the graph, the effect of government spending on the GDP reduces because non-government components becomes crowded by government spending. Impact on unemployment and inflation in the short and long run In the long- run, there is an increase in prices of goods and services. This is referred to as price inflation. As noted by Brue and McConnel (1999), monetary inf lation is an upward movement of money supply. This leads to the price inflation; this also affects the prices of goods and services upwards. Inflation can affect an economy negatively or positively; negatively: there is a loss of money value, a lack of investments due to uncertainties from inflation hence shortage of consumer goods. Positively, this is an advantage since central banks can regulate nominal interest rates, which promote investments. Inflation rate is dependent on money supply, thus, higher inflation means drastic growth in money supply. Being unemployed means no income and therefore no spending. Unemployment has direct and indirect effects on the economy. Directs effects include Output Decline, when people are unemployed, the labor market is affected. This means a fall in output. There is also a loss of income. Conclusion From this analysis, it is clear that sequestration has both positive and negative impacts on the government, the industries, the people and the economy in general. Krugman (2009) notes that indirect results of unemployment include Negative Multiplier Effect and this has an effect in that, when jobs are lost, there is a downfall in purchasing power. This means that businesses will be affected in such a way that consumer goods will move slowly and eventually, the manufacturers will feel the same effect. A loss of income tax affects the economy indirectly in that there will be shortage of direct t axes that are collected from wages. This may lead to the government borrowing or under spending and, therefore, the economy is strained. My Favorite Qubcois Canadian French Expressions As Quebec French language is very rich and full of nuances, it is difficult to choose a few representative phrases. Nevertheless, after much debate, this is my top list. These expressions are difficult to translate, so make sure you read the example to really get the meaning. The forerunners in the 2000 elections are Governor George Bush (Republican) and Vice President Al Gore (Democrat). These candidates have strong and different views on many issues such as crime, abortion and energy. Crime is a major concern of all American citizens and has been addressed by the majority of candidates in past elections. Voter.com, a web site designed to keep voters informed on the candidates and their stand points on different issues, state that â€Å"Al Gore believes that there is no more fundamental responsibility than to make Americans safer and more secure†¦in there in their homes, on the sidewalks, and in their communities.† Gore also helped pass the â€Å"three strikes and you’re out† law. With about 10 years of experience, as a secretary, in healthcare industry, I’ve noticed a multitude of changes within the medical field. On many levels, the medical system has changed, from paper charts to computerized patient files, the way prescriptions are handled and distributed, to file and/or medical documentation; even the paging method has found its place in a new technical era. Email, and employee intranet, has made communication between employers and employees, department to department, even employee to employee much easier and effective. The only thing that hasn’t made too much of a noticeable change is the employee time clock, and even that has managed to find itself an upgrade. Nonetheless, a host of inevitable changes, given the social status of technology, and the best service available by healthcare standards and expectations, it’s easy to see where the future of healthcare and technology lie. Given the past 10 years, technology has gained its own credit in the advancement of the medical industry. Robots have become the gateway to a better healthcare. I feel that within the next 10 years, we’ll begin to see a great deal of technical influence. In a field, where there are already advancements in technology, and its uses, it is fair to say that we could gradually become an almost ‘hands free’ industry. Medical advancements, in general, seem to have been primarily in the use of technology, and/or going green. Therefore the next 10 years, may still prove to be a breeze for the development of a relationship between medicine and technology. Even from my position, the change has been constant and obvious. Having been a secretary, since high school, I am currently in pursuit of my associates in medical administrations. My contribution to the industry has always come through my capabilities with a computer, and over the phone. Staying technically savvy, certainly is carrying its perks in weight with me. Within my experience, the secretary is the ‘go to’ person to get something to work proper y, or for better understanding of a technical meltdown, and if not the person to fix it, certainly the person to find the one who can. From nurses, doctors, patients, and parents, the secretary is the most knowledgeable resource, with a friendly face. As secretaries, we practically hold the key within the medical field. Always there to offer a helping hand, we operate behind the scene in some cases, having my own experience of pulling off many last minutes miracles. In medical terms, we’re essentially the central nervous systems of any and many departments operations. Though, now, being on my path to higher learning, in addition to, my contributions are becoming much greater, and giving my future the fuel to go much further. Like many jobs, the growth of change is inevitable, so to make sure this change is effective; insuring that employees are kept up to date with the latest in changes, adjustments, and updates is key. Having worked within the healthcare industry, I’m aware of the time and efforts invested into insuring that their employees are knowledgeable and capable of managing through company changes. I’ve had the opportunity to take a course or two, in order to insure I’m working at my fullest potent; cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) courses, to employee safety/self defense classes, system program changes, and new program usage. With my efforts, and the aid of my employers, my skills will remain polished and productive. Putting forth my best efforts and keeping the thirst for being successful in all my endeavors, along with the assistance provided through my employer; I will always be able and capable to perform all duties expected of me. With the growth of the medical industry, its employees have to be resourceful and reliable. Furthermore, within this growth, my perceptions haven’t changed, more they’ve evolved. The time within my courses have given me the opportunity to research and better understand the work and efforts that go into running a successful medical establishment. Watching the change over the past decade, leaves me no choice, and certainly gives me the advantage at being a highly adaptable candidate within my position. Growing with the industry, as a secretary I’ve learned so much, and watched a lot change for the better. In turn, my perceptions remain optimistic about the direction myself and healthcare or headed in. In a nutshell, any perception of an ever changing industry is certain to change. In any case, healthcare is changing for the better and the sake of providing the best, quickest, most effective ways to treatment and cure. In a sense, this change is creating a glimpse in the future of healthcare along with its and human longevity. With the healthcare industry taking on the demands of a modern day society, technology has a great deal to do with its future. Technology is set to play such a huge role in the development of healthcare. With the demands on the healthcare industry to offer the most effective methods of diagnosis, and treatments, along with healing time, the approach to technical advances are highly beneficial. Androids that perform, and aid in performing surgeries, the development in medical equipment and their advances/upgrades, the renewal of how patient charts are stored are all evolving, along with many more aspects of the medical industry. Leaving such a wide variety of development in just about every department, looking into the next 10 years of medicine vs. technology, the combinations are endless and sure to be exceptional. Though, with any development and need for change, there’s a cost to be paid. Given the state of a slowly stabilizing economy, the future of all the developments depends on the availability of funds, and people in need of care. Though, very beneficial, the cost of accurate medical attention can come at a higher cost, and at a time when finances are scarious and rising, some are unable to afford the best in healthcare. With the benefits of insurance, there is still only so much that can be covered.
